A very changeable pattern changeable weather pattern with local lows and High winds particularly in the south
The first low is coming in to the southern half of the country more quickly than originally forecast and the main winds and waves will be coming in on Friday with winds and waves fading quite quickly through this weekend. Later next week another low and fronts will come in but timings are probably very inaccurate. In general waves are local and shot period. the following weekend is likely to be quieter with northerly winds. |
|
SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland).
Windwaves and swell building to large on friday and fading back to small through the weekend and early next week. All coasts will be affected
EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW ).
Small northerly swells until the weekend fading very small for a few days and then getting very slightly larger. Winds and weather will be variable and often offshore
FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND
Generally small to medium with south westerly swells and north easterly winds a lot of the time probably the worst prospects of all areas but there should be some small waves for west coasts at the weekend and the eastern end of the north coast.
CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point).
Large wind waves up the channel on Friday but they will fade quickly when the wind drops
Activities and Comments.
Sorting things out after the jubilee events no particular plans at the moment.
The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.
You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
