A big change in the forecast but no improvement in waves.
What was forecast as a long northerly push down the Atlantic to the west of the British isles has broken into two lows one to the north and one to the south. The low to the north will now push more waves down the north sea should push swells down for the east coast but the low to the south will bring north easterly winds across the southern part of the British Isles. There is still little or now westerly groundswell as the blocking high is going to poke in between the two lows |

SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland).
A small but powerful low is forecast to develop over france through the weekend and move east bringing north easterly winds and heavy rain across the south of the British Isles. This is unlikely to produce any useful waves for anyone even the Torbay area which can benefit from easterly winds. After that conditions look very indeterminate with light winds and very little swell to clean up
EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW ).
Northerly swell and wind waves getting well down the east coast at the weekend and early next week. This could bring surfable waves into some less surfed areas to those surfing commuters who like surfing unusual spots could well find something new with a trip along the Kent, Essex and East Anglian coasts.
FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND.
Poor conditions at the weekend with fading northerlies in the west but a medium sized westerly swell could come in early nest week. The northerly or north easterly waves should continue for the eastern end of the north coast.
CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point).
Strong north easterly winds look unlikely to generate much of an easterly swell along the channel but its always worth a look at the easterly surf spots if you need some waves but no promises after that it looks likely to be back to the usual very small to flat
Activities and Comments.
We have a big novices bowls competition this weekend.
The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.
You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
