Staying cold and northwesterly until the middle of next week then another big switch as pressure builds over the British Isles for next weekend

Lows originating over northern Canada are coming in from the north west around high pressure out in the Atlantic to the south local peaks of wind are around now and into the weekend and then again around the middle of next week. After that high pressure is forecast to build to make next weekend quieter.
SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland).

Messy and blown out north westerly wind waves peaking around now and tomorrow. Quieting down a bit around Sunday and Monday but peaking again around the middle of next week. These last ones could be very big. Generally blown out and messy unless you can find a sheltered corner. After that it looks like the weekend of 28th could be much quieter with smaller cleaner waves.

EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW ).

North westerly winds will do very little good unless something comes in off the side in sheltered corners.

FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND.

Large westerly wind waves with some underlying swells right through the lookout period until late next week. Look for sheltered and north cost spots.

CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point).

Wind waves could get up the channel and get quite large during the windiest periods at the weekend and the middle of next week but they will be very short period and messy with no underlying swells

Activities and Comments.

Around Tiverton this weekend hopefully catcing up with a few odd jobs and joining in a bowls tournament

The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.

You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
