A complex low is sitting right on top of the British Isles and staying there
Cool wet windy and wavy weather will continue for the next ten days with very little letup and a strong tendency to a cyclonic wind pattern. That is, west to north west winds in the south west of England and south easterly winds in the north east of Scotland fed by northerly winds to the north west of the British Isles. This looks likely to stick around for the next ten days fading and building as new lows join it. There's just a hint that pressure may start to rise right at the end of the month. |

SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland).
Small to medium wind waves today and probably sticking that way for most of the duration. the biggest peak to large is probably due early next week. Watch local forecasts for the timing for quieter periods or favourable wind directions.
EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW ).
South easterly wind waves developing for the northern end of the east coast. Again watch local forecasts to chose your timing. Some hints of a small underlying northerly swell around the middle of next week.
FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND.
Messy and stormy as the low comes in but smaller with lighter winds than further south. wind waves mostly from several directions.
CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point).
Small to medium local windwaves only.
Activities and Comments.
No weekend plans at the moment just a bit if time to catch our breath!
The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.
You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
