A big low brings strong winds and local waves after that it looks likely that the weather could quieten down
The British Isles is at the centre of a complex low pressure area fed by cold winds from the north and warm moist winds from the south. There are no long range westerly swells and any waves are short period wind waves. The weather will be mixed and showery for most of the week but a big low is expected to come on from the south west at the weekend. After that pressure looks likely to rise and the weather calm down and improve but that is not good news for waves. |

SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland).
Small to flat with local short period wind waves during most of the week. Towards the weekend south westerly wind waves will start to develop with a rather longer fetch these will get into the large range at the weekend as the storm comes across the British isles. The main wind direction will be south to south east and bring large blown out waves to south coasts that will clean up as the low exits later on saturday and sunday but these will fade quickly. North coasts should see the cleanest waves as the low comes in on friday and earlier saturday. After that waves will fade quickly to become small. No proper groundswell.
EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW ).
Small to medium northerly swells for most of the week fading flat at the weekend and turning south easterly wind waves later as the low comes in.
FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND
Small to flat in the west with north easterly wind waves for north coasts.
CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point).
Very small to flat all week. South westerly wind waves building to become large as the low comes in at the weekend after that returning quickly to small to flat
Activities and Comments.
French twinning activities may disturb the update times for the forecasts during the weekend
The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.
You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
