Still no sign of any proper westerly groundswell generators

Pressure is rising rising and the weather will quieten down for the weekend. The next weather system will come down from the north on monday and push strong northerly winds to the west of ireland and ring mostly north westerly local winds. later in the week this wil calm down and leave a sort of flabby indeterminate area where anything could happen but it will bring little or no westerly surf right through to the end of the lookout period.
SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland).

Messy south westerly wind waves for south coasts as the low comes by. North coasts will be cleaner but much smaller. The waves will be short period with little speed and power. Fading small to flat at the weekend. Next week's low still does not appear to offer much for west coasts except for a period of local north westerly wind waves unless some swells get in off the side of the large northerly swell to the west.quickly fading small to flat when the wind drops later in the week

EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW ).

Northerly swell and wind waves fading now but building again at the weekend getting well down the east coast. Smaller than last week as the wind has more west in it and the waves are more headed towards the netherlands. then fading small to flat

FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND.

No significant westerly swell until the low comes down from the north next week but there should be some north coast wind waves and swell for a lot of the time West coasts will also see a big peak of local wind waves early in the week . Calming down later.

CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point).

small and messy with local wind waves from time to time

Activities and Comments.

looks like we are busy locally this weekend gardening and sorting out Jose's mum's flat. we plan to be away for the week beginning 21st may so there will be no updates that week.

The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.

You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
