Simon Anderson is a legend in the surfing world, not only because he invented the Thruster design of surfboards, but also for the huge influence he has had on the industry through his board shaping. Pam Newman, who was in France last week for the Quiksilver Pro and some waves, caught up with Simon for this exclusive interview. |

Simon, what brings you to France?
I'm here to shape some boards during the competition and obviously to go surfing.
Whats the last board you shaped and who was it for?
It was a step up 6'2" rounded pin for Tommy Whitaker and 2 this morning for Mick Fanning.
What are your travel plans for the coming months?
I'll be returning to Oz, I usually go to Queensland to shape in the summer. Am hoping to take some time off at home to spend time with my wife. Hoping to go to the States and Brazil.
So next year will be the 30th anniversary of your thruster design. Is this being marked in any way?
Quiksilver will mark the occasion with a thruster / 3 fin clothing range to be distributed in the larger stores. We're also hoping to release a book in conjunction with 50th anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach where the thruster was first introduced.
Where do you see board design going in the coming years?
Its pretty much heading towards faster quicker higher !!
Who are you shaping for at the moment?
Most of the guys on the WCT and whoever asks me nicely enough!!
