I suck at paddling. I'm not afraid to admit that it's the one area of surfing that lets me down, both paddling out and paddling for waves.
Whilst there are various exercises I can do to improve this, they've never seemed to be that simple. I was therefore keen to try out the Powerstroke Bungee Cord from Fit2Surf.com, which claimed to offer a solution to my paddling issues.

The Powerstroke Bungee Cord is basically what it's name describes - a bungee cord, designed to give you more power to your paddle stroke.

I've used some standard exercise 'bands' before, but the main advantage the Powerstroke offers is that it is much longer, so you can use it to really simulate the movements made when paddling.

It's got two thin, long bungee cords which have handles attached. By removing one of the cords you can therefore make the resistance lighter, which is a great way to warm up or get you started.

To use the Powerstroke you simply loop it around a door handle, bannisters etc in your house or take it outside round a tree, post, drainpipe etc. There is also a rubber collar to use on larger posts etc to hold it in place.

You then get into a bent-over paddling position and use it to practise your strokes - both arms at once or alternate strokes. There are also tons of other exercise movements you can do with it so it's a really handy bit of kit.

The first time I used it the resistance felt strong so I knew it was going to give my shoulders (and back) a decent workout.

Having used it now a few times a week for a couple of weeks, I can certainly notice the difference and am able to use it for longer each time.

The Powerstroke is perfect for those who don't get to surf too much or even those who do, but want to improve their paddling power when it's flat.

It's also lightweight and rolls up small, so is perfect to take away with you on trips, to the beach etc.
