…Jed Stone!
Jed is a Newquay and British surfing legend, so it’s no surprise he received nearly 40% of the votes from you lot who voted.
Jed started surfing back in 1972 and has since won some 36 titles, including English Open, English Seniors, English Masters, Cornish & Open Champion and British Senior Champion. His ambition is to win the ISA World Masters title, having finished 5th and 9th previously.
Luckily enough Jed was at the awards, so when I announced his name as the winner he was able to head on up to the stage and collect his award.
As well as his engraved trophy, Jed won a week in Peniche, Portugal, courtesy of Errant Surf.
He gave an emotional and humble speech worthy of a winner of this award, and the reaction from the crowd was one of great respect.
Speaking afterwards, Jed said: “I am so overjoyed to win this award.
“I can’t believe I have won and it’s truly amazing."
He also explained that he hadn’t been to Peniche for a long time so couldn’t wait to get back.
The whole UK Surf Awards event went really well. It kicked off with a three course dinner upstairs at Fistral Blu, which was fairly well behaved (apart from the ‘loud girls table’ of Celine Gehert, Nicole Morgan, Beth Mason, Corinne Evans, Gwen Spurlock and Kerry Powell).
Then everyone moved downstairs to join up with lots more of the tour surfers for the awards themselves. Check out the full list of winners.
A big thanks and credit go to all of the UKPSA team, including Dave Reed and John Owen, and Kate Adron, who organised a cracking event.,
Also a big shout out to compere Nick Williams, who was brought to tears with the surprise award he received of ‘Services to the Sport of Surfing’.
Thanks also to my fellow guests at dinner – Pete Hughes from Groundswell, photographer Anne-Marie Hughes and man of many hats, Mr Errant/Groundswell/BSA Chairman Chris Thomson.
Award voting winner And the winner of our Animal goodies is….Steve Meinhold! Congratulations, we’ll be in touch to arrange sending them to you.
