The original UK Surf Index (now called 'Surfing Links') was founded in 1996 to provide a comprehensive platform for all the myriad surfing activities and businesses in the UK. Comprehensive and up to date listings of UK surf shops, surf schools, surfboard and wetsuit manufacturers etc.

This provides a free service to the surfers in the UK where they can buy and sell used equipment, find holiday bargains, advertise jobs (or look for one) and other features.

The founders got together in 2000 and decided to combine their talents to provide the best and latest surfing information in the UK through A1Surf.com for the benefit of the British surfing community. A1Surf Limited was incorporated as a private company in December 2001, Company Number 4333084. A1Surf now includes Soulsurfer's BRITISH ISLES Surf Prospects, and a wealth of daily surf reporters and webcams nationwide.

The A1 Surf Shop is the retail arm of A1Surf Limited. Trading commenced in August 2002, selling a few books and videos to help pay for the expenses of running a major web site. It was recognised that most surfers prefer to visit a surf shop to hold and examine products before they buy. DVDs, Videos and Books are products that are proving very popular to buy over the 'net and it was the aim to provide surfers with the best selection available and a fast, dependable service.

Together, these services are used by over a million visitors every month - A1Surf is certainly the most popular UK surfing site and the most remarkable feature of these services is that they are provided free of charge to surfers, and for the benefit of the sport. The founders are proud to have achieved this entirely without any external funding. It is intended to build up resources and services, with the goodwill and contributions of our team of reporters and supporters throughout these islands. No 'boom-and-bust' dot com revolutions here!
