Good long range swells in the west later this week should just last into the weekend
The area of high pressure will just last into this weekend. This will bring light south easterly winds. The long period westerly swells from a slowly approaching large Atlantic low should develop from tomorrow. Next week easterly winds will strengthen for a while as a large low tracks up the channel. |
|
SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland)
The small westerly swell will get a big boost on Thursday as a new swell comes in. Although it is not shown as very large in the charts it is of an unusually long period and will produce some really good clean waves for most west coast spots. These will peak at just about large on Friday and tail off during the weekend. The long period means that some of the flatter beaches will tend to close out, so points and well shaped beaches are the places to go if you really want a good ride and are a skilled surfer. Beginners should really beware dangerous rips on the main beaches and stick close to the lifeguards.
EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW )
Very small northerly wind waves and swells this week Easterly wind waves well build to become well into the medium size next week as a low tracks to the south.
FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND
Very similar to the south west forecast with a peak of westerly swells on Friday.
CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point)
Some small swells should make it up the channel later this week and early weekend. Otherwise very small to flat.
Activities and Comments
Sorry for the missed update on Monday, but we stayed at the coast enjoying the weather and the waves. DID I GET IT WRONG!! The long range swells that I hoped for early last week HAD worked and The later wave charts that suggested they would be poor were wrong. I should have stuck to my guns! A beautiful long range swell came in for Bank Holiday Monday.
The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.
You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
